The present invention relates to a composition for promoting hair growth or preventing hair loss comprising erythropoietin (EPO). More specifically, erythropoietin promotes the growth of hair and can be usefully employed as an active ingredient in a composition for promoting hair growth or preventing hair loss by promoting the expression of human vascular endothelial growth factor (human vascular endothelial growth factor C; hVEGF), human keratinocyte growth factor (hKGF), human insulin-like growth factor (hIGF) and human basal cell lymphoma extra large (hBCLXL) which are known to be growth factors for hair root cells.
