<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fluorescent material of which the emission intensity is high and the afterglow 1-300 ms after the termination of X-ray irradiation is small in a scintillator for a radiation detector. <P>SOLUTION: The fluorescent material includes Ce as an emission element and also includes at least Gd, Al, Ga, O, and Si. M is at least one or more of Mg, Ti, and Ni. The fluorescent material is represented by the following general formula: (Gd<SB>1-x-z</SB>Lu<SB>x</SB>Ce<SB>z</SB>)<SB>3+a</SB>(Al<SB>1-u-s</SB>Ga<SB>uScs</SB>)<SB>5-a</SB>O<SB>12</SB>, wherein 0≤a≤0.15, 0≤x≤0.5, 0.0003≤z≤0.0167, 0.2≤u≤0.6, and 0≤s≤0.1.
