The instrument has a signal receiving device receiving and digitizing a measuring signal. A processing device detects whether a present value of the measuring signal is in an upper tolerance range (Thigh) of an upper switching value (Lhigh) or in a lower tolerance range (Tlow) of a lower switching value (Llow). The processing device determines switching time (Tposswitch) and a time period between last leaving of a tolerance range toward another tolerance range and last occurrence in the latter tolerance range by the measuring signal. An independent claim is also included for a measuring method for determining switching time.
