<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode active material capable of suppressing an increase of an irreversible capacity accompanying charging/discharging and a deterioration of an electric capacity accompanying charging/discharging and suppressing generation of hydrogen gas upon charging, and to provide a manufacturing method thereof, and to provide a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery with a high capacity and excellent cycle characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: A material compound containing an element M capable of forming an intermetallic compound with lithium is heated under an existence of lithium nitrate. Thus, the negative electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery which contains the element M capable of forming the intermetallic compound with lithium and has a moisture amount of 0.04 molecule or less per one atom of the above element M.
