The invention relates to a method for sorting postal items during several sorting passes in a postal item sorting machine (10) provided with sorting outlet, wherein the method comprises grouping the distribution points defining the route of the postman into disjointed subassemblies of distribution points so as to order the items in the sorting outlets for distribution according to the route of the postman. For the various sorting passes, the distribution points of each subassembly are associated with a common sorting outlet each time. The method comprises recovering, in the machine memory, statistical data (11) associated with said distribution points, respectively, the statistical data being representative of the volume of distributed mail in relation to the distribution point in question, and grouping together consecutive distribution points in a single subassembly of distribution points while taking into account said statistical data associated with said distribution points.
