The device (100) has a mobile contact element (18) movable with respect to a housing-firm contact element (24) that is fixed in a housing (10). A contact support (20) is provided on the mobile contact element, and another contact support (22) is provided on the housing-firm contact element. A guiding unit guides an arc into an arcing chamber (36), where the arc is formed between the contact elements. Clamps (12a, 12b) connect external power lines on a side (42) that is turned towards interior of the device. Gases or steams produced by the arc are provided into components. The protective switching device has a coating formed by a material comprising nano-particles such as silicon carbide nano-particles, silicon nitride nano-particles and silicate nano-particles. The coating is formed using by ceramic, metal nitride, metal carbide, amorphous carbon and diamond-like carbon.
