The low swage load fastener comprises a pin member (12d) having an elongated pin shank (15d) adapted to be located in aligned openings in a plurality of workpieces and terminating at a first end in a head (22d) and at a second end in a grooved portion (25d) including a locking portion (25d) having a plurality of lock grooves (26d), the locking portion (25d) having an outer diameter. The fastener further comprises: a substantially straight pull portion (177) extending from the second end of the pin member and including a plurality of pull grooves (181), the pull portion having an outer diameter which is smaller than the outer diameter of the locking portion of the pin member; and a collar (14) including a generally straight collar shank (61) adapted to be swaged into the lock grooves (26d) of the pin member (12d). The pin member (12d) and the collar (14) have ultimate shear stresses of different magnitudes in order that yielding of the pin member is substantially avoided upon swaging the collar thereto. The pull portion (177) of the pin member (12d) has a length that is less than the length of the locking portion (25d) of the pin member (12d) in order that a protrusion length of the pull portion (177) from the second end of the pin member (12d) is relatively short, and the pull portion (177) is adapted to remain on the second end of the pin member (12d) after the installation of the fastener. |
