In an internal combustion engine capable of selectively switching between a low temperature combustion state and an ordinary combustion state, a combustion control apparatus can suppress an amount of smoke emitted from the engine to the ambient atmosphere, and at the same time provide acceleration performance to better meet driver's requirements. The apparatus includes a map unit for calculating a maximum fuel injection amount, which is an upper limit for the amount of fuel being able to be injected into a combustion chamber, and the map unit comprises a low temperature combustion map used at the time of low temperature combustion and an ordinary combustion map used at the time of ordinary combustion, these maps being provided separately from each other.
