The filter apparatus has an exchangeable filter element (18) through which fluid flows outwardly from inner side. The filter element is surrounded by retaining a presettable radial distance and by formation of a fluid flow space (66) by a housing wall (44). The housing wall is provided with multiple passage sites, where part of the passage sites is arranged below adjustable fluid level (68) in a fluid reservoir tank (10) and the remaining part of the passage sites is arranged above the fluid level.
