An impact or blast energy absorbing device comprising a sealed, flexible high tensile strength package (1, figure 1) filled with a first and second type capsule and an incompressible matrix fluid. The first type capsule 5,6,7 is large and compressible and is uniform in size, the second type capsule is relatively small and incompressible and arranged within the voids between each first type capsule. There are, on average, at least two smaller capsules to each larger capsule. Localised shearing gradients are created inside the matrix fluid when the larger capsules are compressed during impact; the adjacent smaller capsules tend to bunch up forcing the matrix fluid to travel around them and thereby increasing the viscous damping caused by the shearing of the fluid. |
