Method and system for testing applications on decentralised programmable control devices of an automation system

The method involves inputting a process value (70) of testing variables (TV1, TV2) to a device specification dataset (50) of a control device (10) using process data (PD1, PD2) provided at a field bus (30) for transmitting contents of the variables. The contents are copied to a process image provided at the bus by the control device after adjustment of the image by the dataset. Communication characteristics of the control device are adjusted for transmission of the contents such that the contents are transmitted to the process value provided at the bus in an associated control unit (20). An independent claim is also included for a system for testing programs comprising programming environment cooperating with a control unit.
