PURPOSE: An external storage device and a control method thereof are provided to minimize the possibility of malfunction by cutting off surge voltage in case of instable initial power, the sudden inflow of surge voltage, and the sudden disconnection of a power supply line. CONSTITUTION: An external storage device comprises a hard disk module(160), a case(102), and a power switch(120). The hard disk module comprises a platter, a head arm accessing data to the platter, and a voice coil motor driving the head arm. The case accommodates the hard disk module. The power switch turns on and off the power applied to the hard disk module.
