PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device recognition method that keeps a device recognized by a host apparatus even if the host apparatus recovers from a standby state. SOLUTION: The device recognition method includes steps wherein: the host apparatus (6) issues a standby instruction to the device (21); the device backs up a setting area (54) in firmware stored in a nonvolatile memory (46) to the host apparatus; the host apparatus issues a standby recovery instruction to the device; the device searches for the host apparatus to check presence of the backed up setting area; the device otains from the host apparatus only the firmware (12) capable of a temporary polling response among firmware necessary for device control, which is stored in the host apparatus; and the device uses obtained firmware to give the temporary polling response to the host apparatus in response to a polling request of the host apparatus.
