PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for designing a foundation of a building which makes construction easy and rational without greatly increasing the amount of excavated sediment even if a bearing capacity of soil is small. SOLUTION: In the method for designing the foundation of the building, a width dimension of a quadrangular cross section concrete foundation beam is preset as a standard value; and a ground contact area adaptable to the bearing capacity of soil is obtained by making the width of the foundation beam constant and forming either or both of a footing and a mat foundation which continue into the foundation beam when a necessary installation area of the foundation cannot be obtained by the foundation beam alone.
