A METHOD OF HARVESTING AND PROCESSING SUGAR CANE

A method of harvesting and processing sugar cane for sucrose extraction, includes harvesting the sugar cane with a substantial amount of the trash adhering to the stalks; conveying the stalks with the trash adhered thereto, to a sugar processing plant for processing the sugar cane to produce raw sugar; and burning the trash on the talks in a burner (10) as an initial step in processing the stalks in the sugar cane processing plant. The burner (10) comprises a combustion chamber (12), an inlet opening (14) for stalks, a conveyer (18) for conveying stalks through the chamber 12 and an exit opening (16) for the stalks. The method includes collecting thermal energy generated by the burning of the trash and utilizing the thermal energy to provide energy for processes at the sugar cane processing plant.
