PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a screw compressor capable of preventing breakage while avoiding liquid compression. SOLUTION: A control section 4 detects the pressure inside a groove 2a of a screw rotor 2, and when the detected pressure exceeds a set value, the control section controls a drive mechanism 5 to advance the discharge timing of a slide valve 6. By this, in the case that a large quantity of a liquid refrigerant is sucked into the groove 2a of the screw rotor 2, even if pressure in the groove 2a rises abnormally, the breakage of the screw rotor 2 and a gate rotor by liquid compression can be prevented by advancing the discharge timing of the slide valve 6.
