PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new antibiotic highly effective against antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains. SOLUTION: There are provided a crossrinked glycopeptide-cephalosporin compound and a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof which are useful as antibiotics. A pharmaceutical composition containing the compound, a method for treating bacterial infections in a mammal using the compounds, a method and an intermediate useful for preparing the compound are also provided. The crosslinked glycopeptide-cephalosporin compound useful as an antibiotic is provided. The compound has a unique chemical structure wherein the glycopeptide is covalently bound to a pyridinium moiety of the cephalosporin. Among other characteristics, the compound exerts an unexpected, unpredictable efficacy against gram-positive bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
