The present invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine (1), particularly of a motor vehicle, wherein the internal combustion engine (1) is provided with a fresh air system (7) for introducing fresh air into combustion chambers (4) of the internal combustion engine (1), wherein the internal combustion engine (1) is provided with an exhaust system (10) for removing exhaust gas from the combustion chambers (4). The internal combustion engine (1) is provided with an exhaust gas recirculation system (13) for recirculating exhaust gas from the exhaust system (10) to the fresh air system (7), wherein the internal combustion engine (1) is provided with at least one auxiliary valve (28) arranged in the fresh air system (7), said auxiliary valve being arranged upstream of intake valves (5) dedicated to the combustion chambers (4), characterized in that the actuation of the at least one auxiliary valve (28) in the current operating point of the internal combustion engine (1) is adjusted such that for an environmental parameter of the internal combustion engine (1), such as nitric oxide content in the exhaust gas, particle content in the exhaust gas, and fuel consumption of the internal combustion engine (1), an optimum occurs, or that for at least two of said environmental parameters, an optimal compromise occurs. |
