PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizer having a large area which is easily manufactured and which can simultaneously achieve both polarization separation and reflection prevention, in particular, in a short wavelength region, and a method for manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: The polarizer is configured to include: a base material 2 having a periodic structure 10 wherein a unit structure wherein the occupancy of an electromagnetic wave incident on a base material surface at a prescribed angle is continuously changed is repeated; and a metal layer 11 provided on the whole surface of the periodic structure 10 or on the surface except ridge portions 4 and/or valley portions 5 of the periodic structure 10. It is preferable that a cross-section of the periodic structure 10 is a triangular wave shape or a sinusoid shape and that an aspect ratio (height/period) of the periodic structure 10 is≥0.5.
