PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a three-dimensional shape measuring apparatus and measuring method for implementing incompatible operations, namely a wide range of measurement of a measurement object and a high-accuracy measurement as to an attention area of the measurement object. SOLUTION: The measuring method includes the steps of extracting a required visual field 52, which is the attention area of the measurement object 50, on the basis of a dispersion value of distance data and so on to obtain a measuring visual field for covering the required visual field; obtaining an optimum base line length B and an imaging distance H which satisfy this measuring visual field, or the imaging distance H to determine visual points P3 and P4 on the basis of these; and calculating an optimum moving direction on the basis of measurement information of the required visual field to measure between the determined visual points in the optimum moving direction.
