The sensor (1) has an evaluation unit (5) to evaluate output signals of a flat camera (2). The sensor is operated in two operation modes in an alternating manner, where surface detection of an object (11) in one of the modes. Color or intensity values are determined for individual image points of the flat camera in the former operation mode. Form of the object is determined in another one of the operation modes in which distance values of the object are determined for each image point of the flat camera. Information of surface and form detection are brought together in the evaluation unit.
