PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a directional pattern-decision method capable of quickly deciding an optimal directional pattern while following the fluctuations of a radio wave propagation environment in radio communication apparatus with a variable directional antenna device. SOLUTION: A plurality of directional patterns are divided into a plurality of groups such that directional patterns with high mutual correlation are in the same groups and directional patterns with low mutual correlation are in different groups. The grouped patterns are stored in a directional pattern memory 104m. One directional pattern from each group is selected from the directional pattern memory 104m. Each time the selected directional pattern is set in a variable-direction antenna element 102-1 to 102-3, one of the selected directional patterns is decided, according to the communication quality of a received signal.
