PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid occurrence of knocking in fail of a variable compression ratio system. SOLUTION: The variable compression ratio system for an internal combustion engine includes: an eccentric shaft disposed between a crankcase and a cylinder block; and an actuator changing a relative position between the cylinder block and the crankcase by changing a rotational position of the eccentric shaft. The clutch mechanism is disposed to switch between connection and disconnection of a first area operated while being in contact with a cylinder block side member to/from a second area operated while being in contact with a crankcase side member, in the eccentric shaft.
