PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ED display element which has less power consumption and is capable of displaying a black tone. SOLUTION: In the display element, an electrolyte layer containing a compound having silver in a chemical structure and a polythiol is provided between counter electrodes, and a driving operation of the counter electrodes is performed so that silver is dissolved and deposited, and the electrolyte layer contains salts of titanium, zinc, tin, thallium, or bismuth and at least one kind of compounds expressed by general formulas (I) X-(L<SB>1</SB>)<SB>q</SB>-((CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>p</SB>-O)<SB>m</SB>-(L<SB>2</SB>)<SB>r</SB>-Y, (II) X-(L<SB>1</SB>)<SB>q</SB>-(CH<SB>2</SB>-CH(R<SB>1</SB>)-O)<SB>n</SB>-(L<SB>2</SB>)<SB>r</SB>-Y, and (III) X-(L<SB>1</SB>)<SB>q</SB>-((CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>p</SB>-O)<SB>m</SB>-(CH<SB>2</SB>-CH(R<SB>1</SB>)-O)<SB>n</SB>-(L<SB>2</SB>)<SB>r</SB>-Y wherein: L<SB>1</SB>and L<SB>2</SB>each represents a bivalent linking group; X and Y each represents a substituent and one of X and Y is a mercapto group; R<SB>1</SB>represents an alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an aryl group, a hydroxyl group, an alkoxycarbonyl group, an amino group, a carboxyl group, or a sulfo group; q and r each represents 0 or 1; and p, m, and n each represents an integer equal to or larger than one.
