PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control apparatus for a general-purpose engine that appropriately determines a warm-up time period by a simple structure, thereby improving fuel economy performance and preventing an engine stall. SOLUTION: The control apparatus for the general-purpose internal combustion engine includes an electronic control unit (ECU) mounted to an electronic circuit board installed near a body of the engine (engine body) of the general-purpose internal combustion engine, and comprises a first temperature sensor installed on the board at a position remote from the engine body and a second temperature sensor installed on the board at a position closer to the engine body than the first temperature sensor. The warm-up time period Ta is determined based on an output of the first temperature sensor (a first temperature T1) and a difference (a temperature difference Td) between outputs of the first and second temperature sensors (first and second temperatures T1, T2) (S14), and an engine speed is controlled to a predetermined operating speed when the determined warm-up time period Ta has elapsed (S18, S22).
