PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To dispose a lever-like member at a position nearer a conveying roller to thereby further suppress the variation of head positions. SOLUTION: A sheet detection device includes a swing member which has a contact part 26a in contact with a sheet in a sheet conveying path and is provided swingably about a swing shaft 26g and an optical sensor 27 serving as a detection means for detecting the swing operation (attitude) of the swing member. The swing shaft 26g is configured so that the axis centerline thereof is parallel to the sheet conveying direction (y-direction). Consequently, since the contact part 26a is not almost displaced in the sheet conveying direction when the swing member is swung, the contact part 26a can be disposed at a position nearer a conveying drive roller 40.
