PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pieced part preventing yarn breakage stemming from heat storage even during a flame-proofing step and further causing no rupture even under high tension on filament yarns in respective steps, and a process for producing a carbon fiber with a pieced part in high productivity. SOLUTION: In producing the carbon fiber with a filament number of 3,000 or more by joining the end of a first precursor fiber bundle and the end of a second precursor fiber bundle to each other via a third fiber bundle, the third fiber bundle has the following characteristics: the thermal conductivity is 3-700 W/(m×K); the filament number is not less than 3,000; the drape value is 2-15 cm; and the flatness index is not less than 20.
