<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the incorrect radiation of illumination light to the outside of a device when it is used as a remote control in a remote control device also usable as a mouse with a provision of an optical pointing device. <P>SOLUTION: The remote control device 1 includes: operating keys 3 for the remote control; the optical pointing device 14 for reading an image on a moving surface 12, and transmitting moving information to an electronic apparatus; a lid 5 which can be opened and closed and can intercept a path of illumination light 16a directed to the moving surface 12; a switch 9 which is turned on and off while interlocking with the opening/closing of the lid 5; and a microprocessor 13 for connecting and disconnecting a power supply 15 and the optical pointing device 14 according to the turn-on/off of the switch 9. By this, a user closes the lid 5 so as to use as the remote control, the path of the illumination light 16a is intercepted, and also the power supply to the optical pointing device 14 is shut off.
