In the present invention, the arginine thiazolidine carboxylate or derivative thereof is useful as a preparation for the treatment of diabetes. The arginine thiazolidine carboxylate or derivative thereof has an outstanding effect in that it improves insulin excretion in pancreatic beta-islet cells (ß-cells) isolated from the mouse, and when administered to Type II diabetic mice (C57BL/KsJ-db/db Jcl) it lowers blood sugar and promotes the secretion of insulin.
