The device has an illumination source, which illuminates the coin (10) to be examined perpendicularly in a measuring field and has a receiver, which is directed to the measuring field at an angle. The receiver is sensitive in three wavelength ranges. The receiver is directed to the measuring field at an angle of 10 to 25 degrees. The illumination source emits white light. An independent claim is also included for a method for recognizing coins.
