The vehicle seat (10) has a seat part (12) and a backrest (14) with a head restraint, where the forces resulting from the inertia of the passenger seated on the vehicle seat are exerted on the backrest or the head restraint during a front or rear crash of the vehicle. An energy absorbing element is arranged in a connecting area (16) of the backrest with the seat part selected depending on the stiffness of the seat part and the backrest.
