PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem wherein a discharge lamp may go out when a power reducing function works in a DC period. SOLUTION: In this discharge lamp lighting circuit 100, a driving voltage generating circuit 12 supplies the discharge lamp 4 with AC driving voltage VL. A control circuit 10 controls the generation of the driving voltage VL in the driving voltage generating circuit 12 according to a predetermined driving sequence. The driving sequence includes power-on, breakdown, the DC period, run-up and steady lighting in this order. The start period T2 of the driving voltage VL in the DC period is longer than the lighting period T1 of the driving voltage VL in the run-up and steady lighting period.
