PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a composite of metal particles with a several nano meter size and bearing a mesoporous material coated on the surface. SOLUTION: A metal particle composite is produced by a method involving steps of producing a slurry containing a basic compound and metal salt fine particles in a solvent; mixing an alkoxide to be a raw material of the mesoporous material with the slurry; forming a composite by compounding the metal salt fine particles with the mesoporous material; forming a metal oxide composite by firing the composite in an oxygen-containing gas atmosphere; and reducing the metal oxide composite.
