PURPOSE: A semiconductor memory device and a driving method thereof are provided to minimize power consumption by inactivating an output enable signal generating signal in a write operation section. CONSTITUTION: An activation signal generator(210) generates an activation signal and responds to a chip select signal and a row address strobe signal. An output enable signal generator(230) is inactivated by the activated signal in the write operation. The output enable signal generator is reset in response to the output enable reset signal. The output enable signal generator generates an output enable signal corresponding to a read command and an operational frequency.
