PURPOSE: A server and a method for providing an instant messaging service are provided to control sessions when the sessions between terminals are not synchronized, thereby stably providing an instant messaging service. CONSTITUTION: An instant messaging service providing server sets a session between the first and second terminals(S201). The instant messaging service providing server receives a message of the first terminal through the set session(S203). The instant messaging service providing server transmits the message to the second terminal. The instant messaging service providing server determines whether a session set in the second terminal is kept(S205). The instant messaging service providing server controls setup of the session according to the determination result(S207).
