PURPOSE: A projection-type image display apparatus and a method for adjusting white-balance are provided to automatically project a white-balance adjusted image onto a screen according to the average brightness level of an input image signal. CONSTITUTION: An APL(Average Power Level) calculating unit calculates an APL per frame of an input video signal(S502), and a control unit sets an opening and closing level(S503). The control unit detects a white-balance controlled RGB gain value from a stored lookup table(S504), and a video processing unit collects the image through the application of the detected RGB gain value(S505). A projection lens projects a white balance controlled input video signal to a screen(S506).
