PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical sensor which has excellent S/N. SOLUTION: The optical sensor A has light transmission/scatter type liquid crystal 3 charged between a first substrate 1 and a second substrate 2. The first substrate 1 has driving electrodes 4 for driving the light transmission/scatter type liquid crystal 3 arranged opposite each other in a substrate plane. The light transmission/scatter type liquid crystal 3 enters a scatter state wherein light is not transmitted when no voltage is applied between the driving voltages 4. The second substrate 2 includes an arranged TFT 100 composed of a source electrode 5 and a drain electrode 6 formed of, for example, polysilicon, for example, a silicon semiconductor layer 7, a gate dielectric layer 8 formed of an oxide film etc., and a gate electrode 9. The TFT 100 can be manufactured through processes similar to those for general active matrix liquid crystal. For example, a dark current is about 10<SP>-12</SP>A. The gate electrode 9 of the TFT 100 is opposed to the driving electrodes 4 of the light transmission/scatter type liquid crystal 3 in a normal direction of a substrate surface so as to efficiently receive incident luminous flux.
