PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an X-ray tube capable of generating a plurality of different characteristic X-rays with the same mechanism as before without enlarging the tube or complicating the mechanism, and capable of efficiently detecting fluorescent X-rays by using optimum characteristic X-rays as an excitation source in accordance with the fluorescent X-rays having different energy. SOLUTION: The X-ray tube includes: a housing 2; an electron beam source 3 provided in the housing 2; and a target 4 that is provided to face the electron beam source 3 in the housing 2 and has a plurality of target layers that are laminated to include elements in decreasing order of weight from the electron beam source 3 side. The electron beam radiated from the electron beam source 3 to the target retains in each of the plurality of target layers to generate characteristic X-rays by switching an acceleration voltage that is applied with: the electron source 3 as a cathode; and the target 4 as an anode.
