PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piston for a Diesel engine with the soot generation amount reduced. SOLUTION: The piston 1 for the Diesel engine furnished with a reentrant type combustion chamber 10 having a cavity 11 formed by recessing a crown surface 3, a lip 12 formed by reducing the inlet inner diameter of the cavity, and a projection 13 formed by bulging the central part of the cavity, is configured so that D1/V≥1.65 and D2/V≥1.47, where V is capacity of the combustion chamber, D1 is the maximum inside diameter of the cavity, and D2 is the minimum inside diameter of the lip.
