The circuit has a freely swinging push-pull converter that is fed with a voltage synchronized with high frequency over a throttle (L1), where the voltage is produced with respect to a direct current of a battery (1). A switch in series to the battery is synchronized with a high frequency to periodically interrupt the direct current supplied by the battery. An additional timer (6) is provided to adjust higher current level for an initial period after the lamp starts with a fast warming up phase. An independent claim is also included for a method for starting and operating a fluorescent lamp.
