PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To estimate an intake air amount in quick response to a change in valve opening characteristics of an intake valve and an exhaust valve in an intake air amount estimation device of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: The intake air amount estimation device of an internal combustion engine includes: a means that detects an intake air amount (GairTH); and a means that detects an intake air pressure. A first corrected value (GairINVO) is calculated based on a variation of the detected intake air pressure. A variation of a real cylinder volume is calculated based on a change in valve opening characteristics of at least one of the intake valve and the exhaust valve. A second correction value (GairVT) is calculated based on the variation of the real cylinder volume and a previous value of an estimate value of the intake air pressure variation. The detected intake air amount (GairTH) is corrected using the first correction value (GairINVO) and the second correction value (GairVT). Further, a current value of the estimate value of the intake air pressure variation is calculated based on the second correction value and is used in the next calculation.
