PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle detecting unit for detecting vehicle information from an image with high accuracy. SOLUTION: The vehicle detecting unit 1 for detecting vehicle information from an image photographed with an imaging means 5 includes: an edge extraction means 12 for extracting a plurality of edges from the image obtained, by photographing the vehicle with the imaging means 5; an edge distribution generation means 13 for generating an edge distribution, in which the edges extracted by the edge extraction means 12 are distributed in edge directions, corresponding to positions on the image; and a vehicle information detection means 13 for detecting the vehicle information, on the basis of the edge distribution generated by the edge distribution generation means 13. It is preferable that the positions on the image where the distribution condition in the edge directions changes in the edge distribution be detected as the edges of the vehicle.
