The device (10) has a pusher (24) provided with a front-sided contact surface for laterally pushing selected objects (12) from a transport device (14). A contact area localizing device is provided for localizing a contact area between the contact surface of the pusher and the actually contacted objects that are pushed from the transport device. A force- and/or deformation-sensitive sensor is attached to the pusher and/or the contact surface and detects elastic deformation of the pusher and/or the contact surface. An independent claim is also included for a method for diverting objects.
