PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small and thin type speed governor for an elevator. SOLUTION: This speed governor for the elevator stops a car by operating an emergency stop device 4 installed in the car, by restricting a speed governor rope by operating a rope gripping mechanism 6 by a centrifugal weight mechanism 13 rotatably installed in a sheave 9 when a rotating speed of the sheave 9 exceeds a predetermined speed, by guiding by wrapping the speed governor rope 7 connected to the car 1 or a counterweight of lifting in a hoistway around the freely rotatable sheave 9, and has two operation members 13 and 14 rotatably joined via support shafts 29 and 31 parallel to a rotary shaft of the sheave 9, a joining member 27 arranged in an end part of the support shafts and joining the support shafts to any of the two operation members, and a recessed part 13a arranged in at least one of the two operation members 13 and 14 and receiving the joining member 27 in the axial direction of the support shafts.
