The method involves dipping a transparent sample body i.e. glass tube (8) in a fluid (22), and varying temperature of the fluid in a controlled manner. A signal corresponding to an optical contrast of the sample body against the fluid is determined based on the temperature of the fluid. Refractive index of the sample body is determined based on the determined signal, where refractive index of the fluid differs from the refractive index of the sample body. A reference sample body i.e. reference glass tube (9), with predetermined refractive index is dipped in the fluid. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining refractive index and/or optical refraction index of a transparent sample body.
