A method has been developed to correct for light absorption due to turbidity and colour of a test fluid, in toxicity bioassays employing a luminescent organism. Knowing the extent of said light absorption, any additional light reduction caused by toxicity of said light-absorbing fluid towards said luminescent organism is distinguished and evaluated. Said extent of light absorption is determined from readings of light output of said organism made in a modified double cuvette, with and without said fluid in a separate outer compartment. Alternatively, said extent of light absorption is estimated from separately measured values of the turbidity and optical absorbance of said fluid, using a regression equation. In either case, values of said light absorption are inserted into a valid formula for calculating additional light reduction due to toxicity, thus obtaining a true index of sample toxicity and avoiding uncertainties in existing colour-correction methods.
