The device has an oxidation catalyst (5) provided downstream to an internal combustion engine (1) i.e. six-cylinder diesel engine, and a reduction catalyst (6) provided downstream to the oxidation catalyst. A reducing agent insertion device (7) inserts a reducing agent e.g. gaseous ammonia, into an exhaust gas line (8) upstream to the reduction catalyst. The insertion device brings the reducing agent into the exhaust gas line in a gaseous aggregate condition such that the agent is uniformly distributed in an oxygen-containing exhaust gas at an inlet (9) into the reduction catalyst.
