The method involves injecting fuel into a combustion chamber of a cylinder in cold start operating mode during gas exchange phase of the cylinder of a reciprocating engine i.e. diesel engine, at a crankshaft angle of 20 degree before or after upper dead center of a piston. An exhaust valve of the cylinder is closed earlier in the cold start operating mode during gas exchange phase than in normal operation mode. Amount of fuel injected during gas exchange phase in the cold start mode is smaller than amount of fuel injected during operating phase of the cylinder.
