PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reproduce video data, which are recorded by a different apparatus and are different in recording format, by a common interface. SOLUTION: A video recording and reproducing device includes: a communication part for performing communications with an external apparatus storing video information which includes the video data and individual reproduction control information intrinsic to the recording format of the video data; a recording format-determining part for determining the recording format of the video data; a common reproduction control information-processing part for reading the individual reproduction control information based on the determined recording format, and generating common reproduction control information which is obtained by converting the read individual reproduction control information into a general purpose format that does not depend on the recording format; a common reproduction control information storage part for recording the generated common reproduction control information in a storage area; and a reproduction processing part for reproducing the video data stored in the external apparatus with reference to the common reproduction control information recorded in the storage area.
