The method involves separating a log (3) from an end of a tree trunk (1) by a sawing device (4). The trunk is moved and positioned in a sectioning device (2) forwardly during simultaneous separation of the cut log by a separating device (5). Branches of the trunk are cut by a cutting device (6). The separating device is provided with a gripper (8) for fixing the trunk at a feeding unit (7) such that the trunk is moved forwards through feed of the feeding unit within the sectioning device. A part of the trunk separable by the sawing device is provided above the separating device. An independent claim is also included for a trunks sectioning device.
